Herika - The ChatGPT Companion

Herika was our first AI mod released on April 26th, 2023. It was one of the first AI mod integrations into a video game. It started off as a rather simple concept of having an AI companion, Herika, summarize books you pickup in Skyrim using GPT 3.5.

Fully customizable personality through the ability to edit her character biography.
In-depth awareness of Skyrim NPCs, locations, and quests.
Customizable TTS voice using Azure, Mimic3, Elevenlabs, etc.
Autonomous command execution (combat, trading, travel).
ChromaDB vector memory system for automatic memory recall.
Auto-generated diary to recount your adventures.
Dynamic task generation based on current context.
Visual scene description using Image-to-Text.

Technical Implementation

This is all achieved by running a WSL2 Debian VM hosting an Apache2 web server running PHP. This webserver acts as the "brain" for Herika and acts as a gateway to AI API's. The rest of the mod is a more traditional Skyrim setup using the Creation Kit and SKSE. By syncing this with Skyrim, we can make a lifelike interactable character.

Evolution to CHIM

We have since moved on from Herika to our latest mod for Skyrim, CHIM. Which is pretty much just an expansion from working with a single NPC, to every single NPC in Skyrim.
