Dialectic

Meaningful AI Gameplay In Fallout

Dialectic brings AI-driven characters, narration, memory, actions, and live world awareness to Fallout: New Vegas and Tale of Two Wastelands.

Overview

Dialectic is a Fallout AI framework built for conversations that belong in the game world instead of sitting outside it as a separate chatbot.

  • Speak through a microphone or type through the in-game chatbox.
  • Talk to characters across Fallout: New Vegas and Tale of Two Wastelands.
  • Give NPCs voices, lip animation, subtitles, spatial audio, memories, and evolving profiles.
  • Let characters react to nearby people, locations, quests, equipment, inventory, weather, time, and recent events.

Wasteland Characters

Dialectic automatically brings suitable nearby humans, non-feral ghouls, super mutants, and robots into the system. Other actors can still be handled manually when broader race support is enabled.

NPC biographies, Fallout voice types, race, gender, factions, inventory, equipment, skills, and SPECIAL data help keep each character grounded in who they are.

World Awareness

Characters receive live context from the game. They can understand the current worldspace and location, active quest and objective, nearby actors, nearby items, points of interest, traveling party, weather, date, time, equipment, condition, and activity.

Spatial hearing and scene checks control who is actually close enough to take part, helping conversations stay attached to the people who are present.

Living Conversations

Rechat allows nearby NPCs to continue a conversation with one another after the first response. Player input can interrupt those exchanges immediately and take control of the scene again.

Dialectic also captures ordinary Fallout dialogue and player choices as background context without confusing those lines with generated AI speech.

Voice And Presentation

Dialectic can associate an NPC's Fallout voice type with an installed voice sample and use it with supported voice-cloning services. Generated dialogue plays with lip animation, speaker-labelled subtitles, actor-facing behavior, and optional positional 3D audio.

Player speech can also use a configured player voice while keeping subtitles available when player text-to-speech is disabled.

Actions, Narrator, And Modes

NPCs can do more than answer questions. Supported actions let them follow, move, attack, trade, inspect, pick up items, wait, travel, and interact with the player or other actors.

Standard, Whisper, Shout, Narrator, Director, Inject Event, and Inject & Chat modes provide different ways to speak to the world or guide a scene.

Memory And Growth

Short-term context, memory summaries, middle-term memory, individual memory banks, diaries, relationships, and dynamic profiles allow characters to remember what happened and change over a playthrough.

Save rollback handling keeps those systems aligned with the game when an older save is loaded.

Fallout: New Vegas And TTW

Fallout: New Vegas is the base requirement. Tale of Two Wastelands is fully supported but not required, and Dialectic follows the player between the Mojave and Capital Wasteland.
